Lee Cattermole (TiB)

Lee is a regular competitor at Santa Pod and at the annual Ten Of The Best competition to find the fastest road legal car in the country. This circa 500bhp rear wheel drive monster currently holds the cosworth 1/4 mile record of 11.1 seconds timed at Santa Pod on Central day 2007. The car is fully home built under the carport making these times an even greater achievment. With the car running 38 pounds of boost flowing through the carport developments spec head there is certainley plenty of power available. With the hopes of a new gearbox and hydraulic clutch conversion Lee should be able to further improve his awsome performances and continue to show some of the big tuner cars what its all about.

Gone but not forgotten

Big Andy W

Andy has owned this car for 5 years. This was the first car He looked at and couldn't believe his luck at finding such a good example first time. With only 58,000 miles on an L plate, standard engine, near mint bodywork and a few hundred pounds worth of Mongoose exhaust already fitted the car had to be his.

Within weeks the tuning bug took hold and Andy fitted a Stage 1 chip from A1 Rally Sport and a high flow panel filter. This didn't stay long though before Andy was back on the phone to A1 to order a full Stage 3 kit.

Next mod was the 18" Rondells which really set this car off. Unfortunatley due to the increase in wheel diameter the gearing changed and the car felt slower. Back on the phone to A1 Rally Sport again and a set of light blue injectors and a chip were in the car.

After a couple of years at this spec the power took its toll and the engine started to sound a little noisey when cold. This prompted a full rebuild over winter. Andy ordered a set of 7.5 comp ratio pistons and replaced all wear components with new. With the crank polished, block decked and rebored and the rods cleaned and checked the rebuild began. The pistons, rods and gudgeon pins were all weighed and matched so there was less than a gram difference between each assembly using Andys kitchen scales (proper anal beard engineering). The bottom end was now built up with athe addition of a windage tray.

Happy with progress so far attention was turned to the head. The inlet ports were increased to 26.5mm by Andys mate with a milling cutter and then smoothed and blended by Andy which took some 10 hours work. The rest of the head was fully overhauled and the manifolds were carefully matched to the ports.

The multilayer steel gasket was now fitted and the engine was back together. All the other parts were acid dipped and laquerd and the engine was back in the car. A full set of yellow Samco hoses and a few other bufty bits were fitted and it was time to fire the engine.

Fired first time and was silent.

After running in and an oil change it was off for mapping. This found a problem with air charge temps so a Radtec RS500 size cooler and alloy Rad was fitted. Torque and power were now around the 400 mark!!

Not happy with the lag of the large turbo escort Andy fitted a mild Anti Lag System along with a Maram 247 shafted turbo.

After many gearbox and transmission problems Andy has now managed a 12.7 second quarter mile and sub 4 second 0-60 runs. With the addition of 330mm AP Racing brakes this car stops well too.

Andy is looking to up the power again this winter and with the possibility of a motorsport box those times are bound to come down even more.

Mark Helm

During the early part of the year Mark bought the car he always wanted. A 3 door Sierra Cosworth. The car was bougt with the intention of restoring the car to an excellent standard and then fitted the engine and Quaife diff from his saff straight in.
After swapping the engine from the 3 door into the saff the car was sold on an dwork really began on the 3 door. The car went off to paint and the engine was stripped. Mark then a the decision to make. Should he just refresh the engine which was always a good strong lump, or whilst it was in bits was it time to look at going for more power. In true Carport style Mark chose more power !!!!
A new bigger turbo was bought and plans were drawn up for the build. Hopefully the car should be on the road for USC this year.
We'll keep you posted !!!!!!

Gone but the engine will live on !!!!!!!

Andy Cross (AJC)

Andy bought the Escort Cosworth Monte Carlo (number 90), 1 of 9 Big Turbo Jewel Violets in February 2006, with 41k on the clock, FSH, already with the brakes, konis, rondells  and a stage 1 chip along with a stainless steel exhaust, it made 268 BHP on the rollers, this was not as fast as his previous Series 1 RS Turbo
so a Stage 3 conversion was fitted with 2 weeks and the outcome being a lot better than the previous power out put.

Then it was of to making the ride height of the car better, he ordered a set of Cobra -30mm springs and after a sunday afternoon under the Carport the car was sitting better and handling better.

He then decided it was time to reduce ACT's and purchase a Pro Alloy 60mm Core RS500 style intercooler, along with uprated radiator and kenlowe fans, which will also be a lot more practical for once an engine is built to handle more power and boost!!!!

Since owning the car, the exterior has only marginly changed, with the fitment of small front number plate, RS500 For light grills and the morette headlights were removed

On its first outing at Santa Pod, the car did a 13.147 1/4 mile on stage 3 (pre fitment of intercooler) which Andrew was very happy with, but more power is needed !!!!!!!

Paul Bickerton

This is Pauls fully stripped out and lightened Fiesta XR2 track car. The car runs a 2 litre ZVH engine on twin 40 weber carbs through an RS turbo lsd gearbox. The car has been lightened as much as possible including fitting a fibre glass bonnet and tailgate. For safety Paul has fitted a full roll cage.
So far the car has not really been used in anger on the track due to a few teething problems with the oil system. Hopefully they are all now solved and the car should be showing some much more powerful cars the way its done this year.

Shell

Shell bought this car about a year ago now and the appearance and spec has been constantly changing ever since lol
When the car was bought it had already had the T3 conversion done but other than that the car was in need of some serious TLC. Straight away Shell set to work and the hideous lexus lights were removed, wheels were changed and a touch up pen was put to good use. The car already looked a million times better.
FITP was approaching and Shell was determined not to blend in. So at 10pm the night before work started on fitting the tiger stripes :)
Shortly after FITP the car was rolling roaded at Awesome GTi in Irlam Manchester. Unfortunately due to a problem with the boost cut a proper figure could not be obtained.
Following this USC was the next target in Shells mind. Having once again got with the appearance of her car it was time for the stripes to come off and work to begin on the engine. The 1.6 engine in the car was getting a bit tired so the decision was made to go for a 1.8 Zetec bootom end conversion. A suitable engine was sourced and after a disasterous night of getting lost in the middle of nowhere miles from home with no phone (flat battery) and then picking up a speeding ticket aswell, the engine was collected. This however was all a week before USC so a mad rush was then on to fit the engine, beige injectors cossie fuel pump and an Ahmed chip.
All seemed spot on with the car on the drive down. But on the 1st run at the pod there was just no boost. This turned out to be the wiring to the fuel pump which had broken down with age. This didn't deter Shell and buy late night racing the car was up and running again and managed an impressive 14.4 @ 98mph
Now reasonabley happy with the cars performance attention was once again turned to the bodywork which was starting to get worse. A full re shell was the most cost effective thing to do so a good condition XR2i was bought form Cardiff and the job was on!
Shell took care of the plate transfers so she could keep the PIB plate and then both cars were dropped off at a friends for the re shell to be done whilst SHell was away on holiday. A new set of 15" TVR wheels were bought of ebay, refurbed and fitted as were a set of bonnet raisers and the car now looks fantastic as well as pulling like a train !!!!!!!!
At RS Owners Club Central Day at Santa Pod in April this year Shell managed to run a 14.0 @100mph
With USC approaching this year Shell is agian looking towards more poe=wer and better times, We'll keep you posted !!!!!!!!
